Incident Response

An incident is an event that could lead to loss of, or disruption to, an organization’s operations, services, or functions. Incident management is a term describing the activities of an organization to identify, analyze, and correct hazards to prevent a future re-occurrence.

Incident response is an organized approach to addressing and managing the aftermath of a security breach or cyberattack, also known as an IT incident, computer incident, or security incident. The goal is to handle the situation in a way that limits damage and reduces recovery time and costs.

When security threats arise, quick incident response is very critical for proper identification and containment of the risk.

NIST breaks incident response down into four broad phases: (1) Preparation; (2) Detection and Analysis; (3) Containment, Eradication, and Recovery; and (4) Post-Event Activity.
